Yoga For Peace: Mindful Movement

Join us for a free evening of movement and mindfulness on International Yoga Day. It is because of yoga's holistic approach to body and mind that the UN decided to dedicate June 21 to this ancient tradition. "Yoga is a sport that can contribute to development and peace. Yoga can even help people in emergency situations to find relief from stress.” said Ban Ki-Moon, UN Secretary-General.  This year we will celebrate by holding a community mindful movement event to promote peace and a communal sense of calm. Plus, we will collect donations for Eden Prairie Schools' school supply program to support local families and students in need (see information below). This family friendly event is open to people of all ages and abilities. This event is scheduled to take place outside on a field at Eden Prairie High School, weather permitting. In case of poor weather, the event will be moved indoors to a gym in the high school activity center.

Bring a yoga mat or towel, a bottle of water, and wear comfortable clothing.

HISTORY OF INTERNATIONAL YOGA DAY

The idea of International Day of Yoga was first proposed by the current Prime Minister of India, Mr. Narendra Modi during his speech at the UNGA, United Nations General Assembly, on 27 September 2014.

He stated: "Yoga is an invaluable gift of India's ancient tradition. It embodies unity of mind and body; thought and action; restraint and fulfillment; harmony between man and nature; a holistic approach to health and well-being. It is not about exercise but to discover the sense of oneness with yourself, the world and the nature. By changing our lifestyle and creating consciousness, it can help in well being. Let us work towards adopting an International Yoga Day." — Narendra Modi, UN General Assembly
